Energy and marine consultancy ABL has completed its technical due diligence for Africa Finance Corporation, to support the investment organisation’s planning and development of the Xlinks Morocco-UK power plant.

The Xlinks project envisages the development of a commercial-scale renewable energy project in Morocco, harnessing solar PV and wind power resource to supply green electricity to the United Kingdom through HDVC subsea cables between Morocco and the UK. The project will also include industrial-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). Upon completion, the project is expected to deliver enough renewable electricity to power over seven million British homes.

ABL’s scope of work covered the review of feasibility studies, market and supply chain studies, cost engineering, environmental and social impact assessments, specialised design studies relating to project critical infrastructure, route and site selection studies and energy resource and yield assessments.

“This is a ground-breaking project, on which we are really pleased to have supported Africa Finance Corporation in their planning. With multi-disciplinary expertise, dedicated in-house consultancy for grid-scale renewable energy development, local market knowledge and established presence in African energy, ABL was the logical partner to support this project.”

Sergio Leone, ABL’s business development lead for Europe and Africa ABL applied its deep pool of energy, marine and engineering disciplines to deliver the scope of work, including expertise in cable and electrical engineering, market studies, structural and civil engineering, marine engineering, and environmental impact.

Further, ABL drew upon the support of its sister company, renewable energy consultancy OWC, which specialises in the development and delivery of grid-scale technologies in wind power, solar PV, BESS and hydrogen.

ABL has not disclosed the value of its contract.

ABL is part of Oslo-listed ABL Group ASA, an independent energy and marine consultancy group to the global renewables, maritime and oil and gas sectors.
