Harland & Wolff is pleased to announce the completion of the first Cory barge at its Arnish site. This barge, named Erne after the Irish river, marks a significant milestone in the ongoing contract with Cory, the largest waste collection and recycling service on the Thames.

The contract with Cory involves the delivery of 33 barges, with eight already completed at Belfast and six at Methil. These barges play a crucial role in Cory’s operations, transporting recyclable and non-recyclable waste, and removing approximately 100,000 truck journeys from London’s roads each year. This not only alleviates traffic congestion but also contributes to lower emissions and a cleaner environment.

The Arnish site has been bustling with activity as skilled workers dedicated their expertise to the construction of these vessels. The completion of the Erne barge underscores Harland & Wolff’s commitment to supporting UK industries and contributing to environmental sustainability.

Why it matters:
Environmental Impact: The barges are designed to divert 650,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from landfills annually, playing a vital role in waste management and environmental protection.
Economic Growth: This contract supports the UK shipbuilding industry by providing high-quality local employment and apprenticeship opportunities. Harland & Wolff’s workforce gains invaluable experience, ensuring the continuation of Britain’s rich maritime heritage.
Craftsmanship and Innovation: The completion of the Erne barge showcases the skill and dedication of Harland & Wolff’s team. Each barge represents a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to excellence in shipbuilding.

Albert Allan, General Manager at Harland & Wolff Arnish, commented on the achievement: “This first Cory barge, Erne, completed here at Harland & Wolff Arnish was incident and injury-free, and the team have done an excellent job.”

Harland & Wolff extends a big thank you to the dedicated team at Arnish for their hard work and expertise. The company looks forward to continuing this significant project and contributing to both industry and environmental goals.
