In May 2024, Brazil experienced a notable rise in its oil and natural gas production. According to data released by the Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), the country produced 3.212 million barrels of oil per day (bpd), marking a 1.1% increase compared to April 2024 and a 10.6% increase from May 2023. Similarly, natural gas production reached 142.516 million cubic meters per day (m³/d), reflecting a 0.6% increase from April 2024 and a 6.8% rise compared to May 2023.
Offshore Production Leads the Way
A significant portion of this increase is attributed to offshore fields, which continue to dominate Brazil’s oil and gas production landscape. Offshore production accounted for 97.3% of the total oil output and 83.6% of the total natural gas production in May 2024. The pre-salt fields, in particular, played a crucial role, contributing 2.208 million bpd of oil and 97.623 million m³/d of natural gas. This represents 68.8% of the total oil and 68.5% of the total natural gas produced in the country.
Key Contributing Fields
The Lula field in the Santos Basin was the standout contributor, producing 893,000 bpd of oil and 41.2 million m³/d of natural gas. Another significant contributor was the Búzios field, also in the Santos Basin, which produced 661,000 bpd of oil and 32.5 million m³/d of natural gas. These fields highlight the importance of the Santos Basin in Brazil’s energy sector.
Enhanced Efficiency and Production Techniques
