Young Turkish engineers of Akkuyu NPP (being built by Rosatom) Yunus Emre Saldiran and Berk Ilbay, as part of a team of 16 employees, represented the Republic of Türkiye at AtomSkills-2024, the 9th international professional skills event of Rosatom.

AtomSkills opens the widest opportunities for participants to improve their professional qualifications, career development, enhance their skills and abilities.

This is the first time I have participated in AtomSkills. My task was to develop a 3D model, as well as to draft technical documentation, and perform troubleshooting tests. It was super interesting and informative! I recommend all my colleagues to participate in the professional skills championship. It develops, unites, and motivates. - Yunus Emre Saldiran, lead reactor control expert of phase one reactor shop of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC, shared his impressions.

In total, teams from Russia, Belarus, Egypt, Kazakhstan, China, Bangladesh, Indonesia, South Africa, India, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, and Türkiye took part in the industry event which was held at the Yekaterinburg-Expo International Exhibition Center. Participants showed their skills in 42 professional competencies.

There are more than 300 Turkish engineers working at Akkuyu NPP. Each of them received a good education in nuclear power engineering at Russian universities. At the construction site, in the workshops, we pay great attention to the first-hand transfer of nuclear knowledge from senior colleagues of Akkuyu NPP to young specialists. AtomSkills raises the prestige of nuclear professions, provides an opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge gained, improve qualifications, and exchange competencies with nuclear engineers from other countries. This approach is fundamentally important for professional development and accumulation of experience. The Republic of Türkiye can be proud of its young nuclear industry personnel. - said Sergei But?kikh, First Deputy CEO of Akkuyu Nuclear JSC, Director of Akkuyu NPP under construction.

The team of Akkuyu Nuclear JSC was made up of 16 employees who showed their qualifications in nominations: environmental protection, process systems of power facilities, radiation monitoring, operation of universal lathes, non-destructive testing, analytical control, electrical wiring.

AtomSkills is a unique event format. It combines a business program and a practical part. Akkuyu NPP develops the nuclear industry technologies of Türkiye and unites all participants of the project. We, young nuclear power professionals, are proud of our work at the largest nuclear facility in the world. - said Berk Ilbay, radiation safety shop expert.

For reference:
AtomSkills is an annual industry championship of working and engineering professions. It has been organized by Rosatom since 2016. The first championship was held in 10 competencies with the participation of about 450 industry specialists and professionals. Today it is one of the largest championships; in 2024 it is held in 42 competencies and brings together 2,000 participants and experts from different countries. For the professional community, participation in the AtomSkills Championship is an important factor in positioning a specialist, and it opens up additional career options. In 2023, the championship acquired international status for the first time, gathering more than 1,900 participants from Russia, Belarus, Türkiye, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Bolivia, and India. Competitions were held in 40 professional competencies.

Akkuyu NPP is the first nuclear power plant being built in the Republic of Türkiye. The Akkuyu NPP project includes four power units equipped with Generation 3+ VVER reactors of Russian design. The capacity of each power unit will be 1200 MW. Akkuyu NPP is the first project in the global nuclear industry being implemented according to the Build-Own-Operate model.

Russia continues to maintain a constructive dialog with its foreign colleagues, developing mutually beneficial cooperation. The implementation of major foreign energy projects also continues. Rosatom and its entities take an active part in this work.
