The Northeast region of Brazil has achieved a remarkable milestone in wind energy production, setting the first record of 2024. On Tuesday, July 27th, at 21:09, the region hit an instantaneous wind energy generation of 19,028 Megawatts (MW), according to the National Electric System Operator (ONS). This figure represents 152.8% of the submarket’s demand at that moment, highlighting the immense potential and efficiency of wind power in this part of the country.

Favorable Conditions Boost Wind Energy
The record-breaking performance is attributed to the time of year, which sees increased wind activity in the region. The period from July to September, often referred to as the “wind season,” significantly boosts wind energy production, providing optimal conditions for wind farms.

Commitment to Clean Energy
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, expressed his enthusiasm for this achievement, stating, “The Ministry of Mines and Energy is fully committed to increasing Brazil’s energy supply in a clean manner, with renewable sources being the main drivers of this change. This new record demonstrates that we are on the right path towards an energy transition that addresses environmental and social issues.”

This recent achievement surpasses the previous record set almost a year ago, on August 14, 2023, at 22:56, when the system recorded a maximum power of 18,725 MW, equivalent to 149.9% of the demand at that time. The consistent growth in wind energy generation underscores Brazil’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy capacity.

Expanding the Energy Matrix
The first half of 2024 also saw a historic increase in the installed capacity of energy in Brazil. Between January and June, the country added 5.7 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity to its electrical matrix, aiming to reach a total of 10.1 GW by the end of the year. This expansion is crucial for meeting the growing energy demands and supporting sustainable development.

In addition to wind energy, solar power has made significant contributions to Brazil’s energy matrix. Data from the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) indicate that solar energy accounted for 19% of the total installed generation capacity during this period, further diversifying the country’s renewable energy sources.

Looking Ahead
The ONS anticipates that the ongoing “wind season” will continue to provide favorable conditions for wind energy production in Northeast Brazil, potentially leading to more record-breaking figures in the coming weeks. This period, characterized by strong and consistent winds, is ideal for maximizing the output of wind farms and enhancing the overall stability of the energy grid.

Conclusion
Brazil’s Northeast region has demonstrated its capacity to lead the nation in renewable energy production, setting a new benchmark in wind energy generation. This achievement not only highlights the region’s potential but also reinforces Brazil’s commitment to a sustainable and environmentally conscious energy transition. As the country continues to invest in and expand its renewable energy infrastructure, the future looks promising for achieving a cleaner and more resilient energy system.
