Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a pre-decisional enforcement conference
with BWXT Nuclear Operations Group officials August 28 to discuss an apparent violation of
regulatory requirements at the Lynchburg, Virginia, fuel fabrication facility.
The conference will begin at 10 a.m. Eastern time at the NRC’s Region II office, Marquis
One Tower, 245 Peachtree Center Ave. NE, in Atlanta, Georgia. Members of the public can attend
in person, view the meeting on Teams, or participate by phone by calling 301-576-2978, passcode
411419403#.
The apparent violation involves an issue reported by BWXT in October 2023 regarding the
capability of a system used to detect a safety hazard during nuclear fuel production. Following
BWXT’s report, the NRC conducted a thorough inspection and confirmed the system may not have
been able to detect this hazard as required by federal regulations.
Although the system may not have been functioning properly, other safety controls remain
in place to ensure plant safety, protecting workers, the public, and the environment. BWXT is
working to correct the issue, and the NRC resident inspector is monitoring plant operations and the
facility’s corrective actions to ensure ongoing safety.
During the conference, BWXT will be able to provide its perspective or additional
information about the apparent violation. The NRC will review the information provided during the
meeting and finalize its enforcement decision in a publicly available document.
