NGK INSULATORS, LTD. (hereinafter, “NGK”) announces that it has received an order for NAS batteries for electricity storage to be used in a demonstration project at the Taiwan Power Research Institute of Taiwan Power Company, Taiwan’s state-owned power company.

NAS batteries are to be installed at the site of Taiwan Power Research Institute inside New Taipei City, Taiwan, for use in a storage battery demonstration project aimed at achieving the dual purpose of conversion of renewable energy and stable power supply in Taiwan in the future. The order is for the advanced type of NAS Battery, NAS MODEL L24, which was released in June 2024. The battery achieves a significantly lower degradation rate of less than 1% per year thanks to a reduced corrosion in battery cells. Another technical achievement is an improved thermal management system in battery modules, which enables a longer continuous discharge. With this demonstration, the Taiwan Power Research Institute plans to examine full-scale social implementation of stationary storage batteries for their envisaged purposes such as absorbing long-term electric power load fluctuations, peak shaving, peak-shifting between daytime and nighttime, and emergency power sources. The NAS battery was selected because it has the characteristic of a high capacity that allows for long-term charge and discharge, an extensive track record of more than 20 years since commercialization, and multiple safety designs.

Taiwan has been moving forward with energy transition under a target of increasing the ratio of renewable energy to 60-70% by 2050 to achieve carbon neutrality by the same year. On the other hand, there is an urgent need to stabilize its electricity supply in the face of a sudden increase electricity demand driven by factors such as the growth of its semiconductor-related industries. Taiwan Power Company is examining the use of high-capacity storage batteries able to discharge over a long period to achieve the dual purpose of stable use of highly variable renewable energy and increasing energy resilience. This demonstration trial is intended to inform this discussion.

NAS batteries are used in various applications including stabilization of renewable energy, electric power demand and supply balancing, and emergency power sources. They have so far been installed in over 250 locations around the world and have a stable operational track record of more than 20 years. NGK is continuing to further promote marketing and sales activities for NAS batteries and contribute to the expansion of renewable energy introduction and realization of carbon neutrality globally.
