Aberdeen based cutting specialists CUT announced the successful completion of all required cuts for a key client as part of a large decommissioning project offshore in Western Australia.

The project utilised their industry-leading 315” cutting machine—the largest of its kind in the world. Four cuts of 6-meter diameter were executed with precision. These were the largest vertical cuts ever performed by a diamond wire cutting machine.

Bruce Sinclair, Business Development Manager said: “This project underscores CUT’s global capabilities, proving our ability to support projects anywhere in the world, regardless of size, material, or depth. To date, in 2024 alone, we have successfully completed 32 projects across six continents. The Australian decommissioning market demands well-established, trusted, and experienced experts—and CUT continues to meet these expectations.

"Our work in Australia spans multiple clients, utilizing our full suite of cutting solutions: from chain cutters and pipe/conductor/riser cutting machines to our largest machines for cutting mid-water arches, disconnectable single-point moorings, and most recently, riser turret mooring structures. In every instance, CUT has delivered results safely, on schedule, and with excellent customer feedback.”

CUT are finding the Australian decom market to be very positive. Bruce added: “Recently, the Government of Western Australia (Department of Energy) recommended the use of castellated cuts to minimise risk in decommissioning offshore platforms. CUT have exclusive use of a patent for castellated/step cuts.

"Therefore, CUT is the only diamond wire cutting specialist who can provide the castellated/step cut service. The completion of a step cut mitigates against any danger of structural members such as platform legs sliding or having horizontal movement relative to the bottom part once cut. A step cut would provide structural stability, even with the top part of the platform resting on the bottom part. Cuts can be done remotely, in air, or subsea, removing the risk of having personnel in the cutting vicinity.”

Bruce Sinclair said: “With over 40 years of operational experience, CUT leverages lessons learned and combines them with the most comprehensive range of cutting machines available—handling targets from 3” to 315” in diameter. Our unique high-performance diamond wire and the expertise of the most experienced offshore operators in the industry ensure each project is executed safely and efficiently. The entire CUT team remains committed to customer satisfaction and project success.”
