Protio and the Port of Tallinn are pleased to announce a Memorandum of Understanding to explore the development of a groundbreaking project where Protio would produce e-Methanol, Sustainable Aviation Fuel and potentially e-NG in Muuga Harbor. This MOU marks Protio’s commencement of comprehensive due diligence assessments to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed e-fuels project.

Shaun Kizewski, CEO of Protio, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are excited to take this step with the Port of Tallinn as it represents a significant step towards our shared vision of a sustainable future. We believe the Port is strategically located at a critical nexus for both domestic and international trade, making it an ideal location for our green fuels initiative. The harbor’s ideal position for transportation and energy enhances its attractiveness as a hub for a wide variety of international and regional customers seeking e-fuels as a decarbonization solution.”

The CEO of the Port of Tallinn, Valdo Kalm, stated that the MOU with Protio is of great importance to the Port of Tallinn. It is a step forward in the strategy to develop green energy in the industrial parks of Muuga and Paldiski South Harbour. The production and storage of green energy is clearly a new business and growth area for the Port of Tallinn. At the same time, it brings the port closer to achieving its sustainable goals.

“The transition to alternative fuels by ships reduces greenhouse gases (GHG), improves air quality, and helps protect the marine environment. The Port of Tallinn aims to achieve climate neutrality and zero emissions for ships docked by 2050. Increasing the availability of alternative fuels enables the shipping industry to become more environmentally friendly and reduce the carbon footprint of ports,” said Kalm.

“Since first visiting Estonia as part of a delegation a decade ago, it was clear Estonia is forward-leaning,” said Matthew Russell, SVP of Development. “They are agile and always looking to stay ahead of the pace and that’s something we appreciate. With this mentality, not to mention the other positive synergies, and our experience, we are excited about what the future will bring.”

As a diversified green steel and chemicals company, Protio’s mission is to transform the world’s hydrogen supply to achieve net-zero, to positively impact the environment, and help both communities and industries decarbonize through the use of our green steel and associated chemicals including green ammonia, e-Methanol, Sustainable Aviation Fuel and e-NG.
