TGS, a leading global provider of energy data and intelligence, has been awarded a significant project in collaboration with RTE International and Consultores de Engenharia e Ambiente S.A. (COBA) to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the electric interconnection of the Cabo Verde Islands. TGS will leverage its extensive offshore wind intelligence under the 4C Offshore name.
This study is part of Cabo Verde's ambitious energy transition efforts, underpinned by the Government of Luxembourg’s Development-Climate-Energy (DCE) program. The initiative aims to increase renewable energy penetration, reinforce energy security, and promote economic sustainability in Cabo Verde.
The analysis will assess the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of interconnecting the islands, a vital step toward optimizing renewable energy resources such as wind, solar, and potentially green hydrogen. With its unique geographic and climatic conditions, Cabo Verde presents opportunities to harness renewable energy effectively, and the island interconnection would further enhance energy efficiency, reduce costs, and increase the potential for offshore renewable energy projects.
Key elements of the study include:
Evaluating the potential for offshore and onshore renewable energy integration.
Exploring storage solutions such as pump storage systems and battery storage.
Addressing the environmental impact of interconnection.
Assessing long-term economic benefits for the nation, particularly in reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
This study will be a cornerstone of Cabo Verde's Energy Master Plan (2018-2040), which aims for 50% of its electricity to be generated from renewable sources by 2030.
Carel Hooijkaas, Executive Vice President of New Energy Solutions at TGS, stated, “We are proud to be part of this transformative journey for Cabo Verde. The project award underscores our commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions and aligns with the ambitious goals of Cabo Verde's Energy Master Plan. By leveraging the 4C Offshore expertise, we aim to help Cabo Verde and other island nations achieve their vision of a sustainable and resilient energy future, significantly reducing carbon footprints while enhancing energy independence."
