Trina Storage, the leading global energy storage solution provider and business unit of Trinasolar, has signed an agreement with Lower 48 Energy to deliver a 98 MWh BESS project at a two-acre site in Preston in the UK.

The implementation makes use of the vertically integrated Trina Storage Elementa system, featuring Trina Storage’s second-generation proprietary cells. Deliveries are scheduled for Q4 2024, with energisation planned for 2025. Once energised, the project will bring new grid stability and arbitrage capabilities to the site. It will have the capacity to store and supply 66 million kWh of electricity annually, which is equivalent to supplying 22,750 households, and will help enable further renewable energy generation and replace gas peaking plants.

As a new independent power producer in the UK market, this project is the first for Lower 48 Energy, and the first investment into UK battery energy storage systems by its majority owner, Castleton Commodities International LLC.

Hugh Mainwaring, Chairman & CEO of Lower 48 Energy, said: “We decided to partner with Trina Storage for this project due to the company’s positive track record in delivering systems like this one, as well as the wider Trinasolar group’s reliability, experience and strong financial backing.”

“Through our excellent experience with Trina Storage’s UK engineering team, we’re confident the Elementa product has everything to meet our needs, with the fully integrated system – using proprietary Trina cells – ensuring that we benefit from the company’s technology across the board. The local engineering expertise of Trina Storage will be crucial in bringing everything together in a seamless fashion, including the integration of Trina Storage Elementa with the PCS/MV Skids and PowerPlantController. We’re looking forward to seeing the project take shape.” Gabriele Buccini, Head of Storage at Trinasolar, said: “We are confident this will be the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership, and are eagerly anticipating delivering the project and seeing the benefits it brings. Lower 48 Energy have a major role to play in the UK’s ongoing energy transition, so we are proud to be helping them take this important step in transforming their storage capabilities.”
