A Conference on the Results of the Global Methane Reduction Development Initiative Held in Baku

Within the framework of the Baku Climate Action Week, an international conference on the results of the Global Methane Reduction Development (AGMR) initiative was held at the Stone Chronicle Museum.

The conference was attended by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, international oil and gas companies such as SOCAR, bp, Petronas, Baker Hughes, SLB and other service providers, the World Bank, the Environmental Protection Fund, Imperial College London, as well as the Clean Air Task Force. ", "Methane Guiding Principles" (MGP), "Oil and Gas Climate Initiative" (OGCI), "GHGSat", "SeekOps" and other international organizations took part.

Umayra Taghiyeva, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Afgan Isayev, Vice President of SOCAR, and Bakhtiyar Aslanbeyli, Vice President of BP Company, who spoke at the conference, spoke about the implementation of the provisions of the "Paris Agreement", the importance of reducing methane emissions, activities in this direction, implementation gave detailed information to the participants about the ongoing decarbonization projects. In the speeches, it was emphasized that the AGMR initiative implemented in the framework of the "Year of Solidarity for the Green World" promotes the reduction of methane emissions in the oil and gas sector.

Later, the conference continued with panel sessions on "Methane scientific research", "Progress, challenges and next steps in the operation of the AGMR initiative", "Emission measurement, adaptation measures and the role of technology in their reduction". During the sessions, a wide range of opinions were exchanged about the results obtained during the implementation of the AGMR initiative, positive indicators for reducing emissions, and implemented projects.

During the presentations of the international organizations and influential scientists participating in the event, detailed information was given on the dynamics of methane emissions in various sectors over the years, innovative technological innovations in the field of greenhouse gas reduction, satellite monitoring, the creation of a transparent reporting system on emissions, as well as the application of digital tools in this field.

It should be noted that SOCAR, together with bp, is implementing the AGMR initiative within the framework of the MGP as the leading industry leaders in Azerbaijan. The main goal of the initiative is to promote methane emission measurement, reporting and reduction activities for oil and gas operators operating in Azerbaijan, to improve their knowledge and skills in this field, as well as to support the application of the best available technologies.
