Jacobs was selected by Cadent Gas on behalf of Capital Hydrogen to deliver the Pre-Front End Engineering Design (Pre-FEED) phase of the East London Hydrogen Pipeline (ELHP) project. The pipeline will span 56 miles (90 kilometers) through East London, north of the River Thames and will connect major industrial zones to a steady hydrogen supply. This project will assist in the decarbonization of sectors like transportation and power generation – all crucial to global and regional energy transition.

Jacobs will leverage decades of experience helping the world evolve the way energy is generated, moved and used to deliver Pre-FEED design, cost analysis, strategic planning and consenting, environmental assessment and engagement services. These efforts will collectively offset the project up for future success, and will ultimately support the country’s net zero targets creating a hydrogen network that reduces carbon emissions in a traditionally carbon-heavy area.

The ELHP project is a key component of Capital Hydrogen’s larger program, which will deliver a transition to hydrogen for gas pipeline networks in London. The project also has the potential to generate skilled jobs, increase energy independence and offer greater choice to consumers. Capital Hydrogen is a collaboration between Cadent, SGN and National Grid Gas Transmission.

“Our hydrogen teams work collaboratively across geographies and sectors, turning transformational ideas into intelligent solutions to create a cleaner energy future for all,” says Jacobs Vice President James Nash. “This project builds on our longstanding relationship with Cadent and propels this crucial East London decarbonization project to benefit the community and industry in the area.”

“Hydrogen is essential to decarbonize operations along the north bank of the River Thames,” says Cadent Strategy Director Angela Needle. “By ensuring a secure and reliable supply of hydrogen, we’re not only supporting the transition to a net zero future but also helping to secure the long-term viability of these major employers, safeguarding and creating jobs and driving economic growth in the region.”

Upon completion of the Pre-FEED, the project will advance to the full FEED phase, where final engineering designs will be developed in preparation for construction.

Jacobs continues to engage with clients cross-sector on all energy transition fronts, turning the energy problem into a growth enabler through research, planning, feasibility studies, proof-of-concept and pilot programs for renewable transmission and distribution and generation projects. This project is another key energy transition project in Jacobs’ growing portfolio, adding on to recent work delivering Pre-FEED for Project Union for U.K.’s National Gas, supporting BaroMar with a Long-Duration Underwater Energy Storage Pilot, and as program manager for the ARCHES Hydrogen Hub.
