Global Energy Group is proud to announce the integration of three newly qualified fabrication apprentices into its core workforce. The apprentices, who recently completed an intensive 16-week Welding & Fabrication SVQ course at the Nigg Skills Academy, are now contributing their skills as apprentices to the fabrication team at the Port of Nigg.
Two of the apprentices, Prentice Waldie & Andrew Loudin, are currently working on the fabrication of towheads on behalf of Subsea7, as part of a contract awarded to Global Energy Group to support the Aker BP-operated Yggdrasil Field Development in the North Sea. The third apprentice, Euan Barr, has joined the Site Services division, specialising in the maintenance and enhancement of hydro facilities.
The Nigg Skills Academy, a not-for-profit training facility located at the Port of Nigg, plays a crucial role in preparing the future workforce for a fabrication career in the energy industry. By providing comprehensive training in welding and fabrication, the academy ensures students gain both the qualifications and hands-on experience necessary to succeed. The three apprentices have transitioned seamlessly into the core fabrication team, supported by their colleagues and supervisors as they progress onto the next stage of their professional journey.
Scott Hickman, Senior Superintendent, has been closely involved in managing the apprentices. "The attitude and willingness to learn demonstrated by these apprentices has been fantastic. They have really gone the extra mile, staying late to practice and improve their skills. It’s great to see their enthusiasm and commitment."
The apprentices have not only impressed with their technical abilities but have also expressed a strong interest in broadening their skillsets, a development that Global Energy Group fully supports. They have each been paired with an experienced member of the team to mentor them as they grow within the business, ensuring they have access to guidance and expertise whenever needed.
One of the apprentices, Andrew Loudin, shared his experience: “The support I’ve received from the team has been brilliant. Moving from the Nigg Skills Academy to full-time work was made so easy thanks to the mentorship and teamwork here. It’s a great place to work and we’re involved in some exciting fabrication projects.”
Stuart MacKay, Fabrication Manager, commented on the importance of providing opportunities for the next generation of workforce. "Bringing in fresh talent is key to the future success of Global Energy Group. These apprentices bring a new perspective and energy, which helps drive productivity and maintain our high standards of quality. We are committed to continuing to support their development as they grow within the team."
Looking ahead, the Fabrication division will soon welcome three more welding apprentices from the Nigg Skills Academy, who are in the final stages of their training. Their arrival will further strengthen Global Energy Group’s workforce and reinforce the company's dedication to developing skilled professionals for the energy industry’s future.
Through initiatives like these, the Group continues to demonstrate its leadership in driving both innovation and workforce development in Scotland's energy industry.
