AB InBev is continuing its sustainability strategy at the Spaten-Löwenbräu brewery in Munich – with the installation of a battery storage system with a capacity of 1.8 megawatts by EDF Renewables Deutschland. This is already the third storage system installed in Germany by the world's leading brewery group, marking a further milestone for AB InBev in the direction of Net Zero.
The new electricity storage system at Spaten-Löwenbräu in Munich offers the brewery maximum flexibility to avoid peak loads and reduce the burden on the local grid. The brewery currently brews its beer using renewable electricity. It is the third of a total of four joint projects between EDF Renewables and AB InBev in Germany.
In the ten-year partnership, EDF Renewables Deutschland bears all investments and risks. The battery storage system at Beck & Co. in Bremen kicked off at the beginning of November 2023. The second battery in Wernigerode was put into operation in June 2024.
The battery storage facility at the remaining AB InBev site in Issum near Diebels is to be commissioned over the course of the coming year. In total, the four AB InBev projects will provide more than five megawatts of battery power and will accompany the company on its way to Net Zero.
Dr. Friedrich Geiger, Brewery Director Munich, is convinced: “With the new battery storage system, we are relying on an attractive technology, thanks to which we can not only produce more energy-efficiently with little effort, but also save electricity costs and relieve the local power grid.”

Companies in the food industry, including breweries, face particular challenges: high energy requirements, strict regulations and mandatory process sequences that must be completed in full - they therefore benefit from innovative solutions such as electricity storage.
