With its 100th delivery to Europe, Axpo has reached a new milestone in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) business. LNG ensures the security of supply for customers at home and abroad and is an important part of the customer and trading business.

In total, Axpo delivered 100 LNG shipments to Europe between January 2020 and September 2024, mainly to Spain, France, Italy and Portugal. This corresponds to 76.07 terawatt hours (TWh), which is equivalent to the annual electricity supply of around 4.7 million households.

In the 2023/24 financial year alone, Axpo imported 25 LNG shipments to Europe. At around 16.2 TWh, this represents the annual gas consumption of one million European households.

Domenico de Luca, Head of Customer and Trading Business, says: "Axpo's activities in natural gas and LNG have continued to gain momentum in recent years and are contributing to the security of supply for our customers. Gas is key to diversification and bridging the energy transition while renewable energy technologies continue to expand."

Axpo is active in the midstream and downstream business of natural gas and LNG in Switzerland and abroad. Axpo has been trading and transporting gas throughout Europe for almost 20 years, including LNG for more than a decade. Customers include both small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large energy-intensive industrial companies.

Axpo's LNG unit has extensive expertise in supplying industrial customers and is increasingly expanding its activities to include the so-called bunkering business, including chartering LNG bunker vessels . LNG bunkering allows ship-to-ship and ship-to-truck fillings with liquefied natural gas and represents a valuable solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially for the shipping industry. Bunkering is an increasingly important and growing part of Axpo's LNG business, as it represents a cleaner and more competitive alternative to the fuels traditionally used in the maritime sector.
