Torus, Inc., a leading provider of commercial-scale energy storage solutions, today announced the completion of a comprehensive solar and energy storage installation at La Diana Market, a beloved family-owned local grocery store in Salt Lake City. The installation includes a solar array combined with Torus's advanced energy storage and management system, marking another milestone in the company's mission to transform local businesses into efficient mini power plants.

The project was made possible through the Salt Lake Solar Powered Communities project led by Salt Lake City’s Sustainability Department in partnership with Utah Clean Energy. It is a multi-year project to make solar more available to businesses in under-resourced areas of the city, with preference given to businesses owned by or serving BIPOC individuals. A grant through Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN) helped to fund La Diana’s battery storage and solar project in combination with tax credits and rebates.

Supporting Local Business with Advanced Energy Solutions

The installation at La Diana features an advanced energy storage system and high-efficiency solar modules, delivering clean energy production capacity. This system demonstrates Torus's commitment to providing customized energy solutions that meet the unique needs of small businesses while contributing to the broader Torus Community energy-sharing network.

“Local restaurants are the heartbeat of our communities, and they face significant energy costs that impact their bottom line,” said Nate Walkingshaw, CEO and co-founder of Torus. “By bringing our advanced energy storage and solar solution to La Diana, we're helping a valued local business reduce operating costs while strengthening our community's energy resilience.”

Building Community Energy Resilience

The system provides industry-leading outage protection, switching to backup power within 250 milliseconds—a critical feature for a restaurant that relies on consistent power for refrigeration and food preparation. This installation strategically places energy storage near distribution points, helping to relieve transmission congestion while ensuring La Diana has reliable access to clean energy.

“Each installation in our network represents another step toward our vision of a more sustainable and resilient energy future,” added Walkingshaw. “La Diana is becoming part of a growing network of mini power plants that support our entire community's energy needs.”

Expanding the Torus Community Network

As part of the Torus Community initiative, La Diana's installation can share excess stored energy with neighboring businesses during periods of high demand, contributing to a more stable and efficient local grid. This installation follows Torus's recent recognition in TIME's Best Inventions of 2024 list for their innovative Nova Spin flywheel energy storage system.

The project at La Diana represents Torus's ongoing commitment to making advanced energy solutions accessible to local businesses while building a more resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure for the entire community.
