Waga Energy and the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis have joined forces to deploy an innovative project combining Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) production and solar energy at the Aix-en-Provence landfill site (Bouches-du-Rhône).

The WAGABOX® unit will replace three engines currently used to convert gas into electricity, thereby boosting energy production. The system will provide local, renewable and easily storable energy thanks to existing gas infrastructures, while optimizing the site’s energy autonomy thanks to the installation of solar panels. At the Metropole’s request, to maximize the energy contribution, the WAGABOX® unit will be supplied with electricity by a 1-megawatt peak (MWp) photovoltaic plant, also built and operated by Waga Energy on the Arbois site.

The WAGABOX® unit will be commissioned in 2026 and operated by Waga Energy for an initial period of 16 years. The unit will produce 188,000 MMBtu of RNG per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of almost 9,000 households. This initiative will avoid the emission of 15,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent each year, by reducing the use of fossil natural gas.

This project represents a major step forward in the local energy transition, while actively contributing to the fight against climate change.

“With this new RNG production unit, the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolitan area pursues its ambition to generate green, eco-friendly energy. What’s more, this initiative aligns with a circular economy approach since it enables the recovery of waste which is transformed into a rare source of energy, both for our region and its residents. At present, one of our top priorities is to produce energy within our region, while protecting our environment and planet.” Martine Vassal, Chair of Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis

“It is a great honor for us to have been chosen by the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis to carry out this ambitious RNG injection project at the Arbois Landfill site. By coupling the WAGABOX® unit with a photovoltaic power plant, we continue to innovate in the fight against climate change, enhancing the energy autonomy and environmental performance of our facilities. Thanks to this pioneering project, the local residents will be able to consume significant volumes of renewable gas produced locally from their own waste.” Mathieu Lefebvre, Chair and Chief Executive Officer, Waga Energy
