"NABU is misinterpreting our political demands in the run-up to the federal election: We are concerned with lower costs for grid expansion through optimized area planning. This lowers the costs of the energy transition and thus the price of electricity, thus advancing climate protection. More climate protection, in turn, protects ecosystems on land and at sea. The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency decides which areas are used for offshore wind," says Stefan Thimm, Managing Director of the Federal Association for Offshore Wind Energy (BWO).
“We are very pleased that offshore wind is making an important contribution to marine conservation with the EUR 2023 million in revenue from auction proceeds in offshore wind tenders in 400,” he adds.
"We are also still committed to maintaining the environmental impact assessment for offshore wind farms. We reject the current federal government's plans to abolish these assessments when implementing the EU RED III directive," said Thimm.
"In order to understand the impact of wind farms on the distribution of guillemots and razorbills in the German North Sea, we commissioned a study by the renowned environmental institutes IBL Umweltplanung and BioConsult SH. At the end of 2024, this came to the conclusion that the behavior of guillemots and razorbills in the vicinity of offshore wind farms shows strong seasonal and regional differences. In comparison to other studies, a blanket large-scale avoidance could not be confirmed," explains the BWO managing director.
