Electrification and E-Fuels for the Offshore Energy Transition

Europe’s ambitious target of installing over 300 GW of offshore renewable energy by 2050 is a cornerstone of its decarbonisation strategy. However, achieving this requires a massive fleet of ships for installation, operation, and maintenance—potentially emitting 5-7 million tons of CO2 annually by 2050.

In this position paper by DMEC’s Benjamin Lehner, part of the EU-SCORES and Nautical Sunrise projects, we explore sustainable solutions for decarbonising these fleets:

– Direct Electrification for smaller vessels like tugboats
– Hydrogen & Ammonia for mid-sized ships
– E-Fuels like Methanol for larger vessels

The article highlights the advantages, challenges, and examples of these innovations, supported by EU initiatives and subsidies.
