- CEO Lim Jin-dal: “HS Hyosung Advanced Materials will enhance its global environmental leadership and pursue a sustainable future.”

HS Hyosung Advanced Materials has received official validation from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for its 2030 greenhouse gas reduction target.

The SBTi, a global initiative jointly established by prominent international organizations—including the World Resources Institute (WRI), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), CDP, and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)—evaluates and certifies corporate emissions reduction targets to ensure they align with the latest climate science for limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

This approval is a crucial step in HS Hyosung Advanced Materials’ strategy to address climate change through scientifically validated targets. This SBTi certification known for its stringent international standards, underscores HS Hyosung Advanced Materials' commitment to meaningful climate action and reinforces its position as a global environmental leader.

Lim Jin-dal, CEO of HS Hyosung Advanced Materials, said: “The latest approval signifies far more than merely setting reduction goals; it represents internationally recognized, science-based targets. We will strive to elevate our global environmental leadership and actively contribute to a sustainable future.”

The approved targets for HS Hyosung Advanced Materials include a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 from a 2021 base year. This covers direct emissions from energy consumption and process operations at global business sites, as well as indirect emissions from purchased electricity and steam. Furthermore, the company aims to reduce selected Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030 from a 2021 base year. This focuses primarily on Category 1 (purchased goods and services) and Category 3 (fuel and energy-related activities), which represent the largest share of the company’s value chain emissions.

To achieve these targets, HS Hyosung Advanced Materials has developed specific action plans. These include greenhouse gas and energy reduction activities, installing solar power generation facilities, and concluding power purchase agreements (PPAs). The company plans to engage with its business partners, encouraging them to set their own reduction targets and supporting their efforts in emission reduction activities.

In addition to its greenhouse gas reduction commitments, in October 2024, the company received the ‘Platinum Medal’ from EcoVadis, placing it in the top 1% of over 130,000 companies evaluated globally for sustainability performance. Furthermore, the company was listed in the ‘2024 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) Korea’ for two consecutive years, further solidifying its reputation as a leader in ESG management.
