The WGP Group announced the third extension to their Chirag Azeri Reservoir Seismic Project (CARSP) Life of Field Seismic (LoFS) survey for the BP operated partnership Azerbaijan International Operating Company (AIOC) in the Caspian Sea. Since 2007 WGP has designed, installed and operated a bespoke system capable of repeat All-Azimuth Ocean Bottom Cable (OBC) seismic surveys in this area enabling AIOC to monitor reservoir fluid movement.

Owing to the size of the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) oilfield, one of the world’s largest producing offshore fields, WGP implemented an innovative solution using OYO Geospace’s GERI 4C OBC on a semi-permanent basis. WGP has modified the PSV M/V Citadel into a unique OBC vessel with the capability to deploy and retrieve up to 132km of cable across multiple survey areas, monitor receiver placement via ROV and provide the seismic source, maximising efficiency and minimising oilfield operational disturbance.

3 base line and 2 repeat surveys, each with a total average spread of 540 km2 were performed between 2007 and 2009, with 195,000 total shots acquired. With sea trials successfully completed, Phase 2 of CARSP commenced in April 2010 and includes 3 new base lines and 1 repeat survey with total shots estimated at 250,000.

CEO of WGP, Mark Burnett, stated ,” Having been instrumental in BP’s inaugural LoFS project at the Valhall field in 2003, WGP is extremely pleased to continue this pioneering work and long-term relationship. This extension displays confidence in our capability to deliver safe, quality geophysical solutions, coupled with the GERI OBC and the high value of time-lapse reservoir monitoring. As the rest of the industry begins to accept the benefit of LoFS, WGP shall continue to provide AIOC with the top-end data they expect.”
