JENBACH, AUSTRIA - GE Energy has introduced the J312 GMD, its first Jenbacher gas mechanical drive engine for use in gas compression. The new engine was installed in December 2004 at a gas-gathering field in northern Louisiana. The J312 GMD engine is driving a GE high-speed, Model A354 three-stage compressor. The system is compressing 3.5 Mmcf/day of gas.
The 12-cylinder, J312 GMD is rated at 676 bhp (brake horsepower) at 1,800 rpm and was engineered and tested at GE Energy's gas engine center in Jenbach, Austria.
The initial compressor system was designed and packaged by Standard Equipment Company (SEC) of Houston, Texas. Mustang Gas Compression, a rental compression and service company located near Houston, placed the new engine-compressor package at a Louisiana gas-gathering facility.
"The new J312 GMD is ideally suited for the gas compression segment," said Barry Glickman, general manager for GE's Jenbacher gas engine division. "The J312 GMD provides a more robust product with a lower total cost of operation. Our customers will benefit from the fuel flexibility, advanced electronic controls, low emissions and long service intervals."
GE's Jenbacher gas engines range in output from 0.25 to 3 MW and run on natural gas as well as various "specialty gases" created from biomass, landfills, coal mines, sewage and industrial wastes. The gas engine division is headquartered in Jenbach, Austria, and offers a comprehensive range of services.

The J312 GMD is equipped with the DIA.NE® XT monitoring system, which interfaces easily with compressor controls, and provides an air/fuel ratio control to help maintain NOx emissions without using oxygen sensors. All J312 GMD engine information is available on an easy-to-use interface panel that does not require any additional devices.
