EXPEC ARC to Lead Seismic Modeling Effort

The EXPEC Advanced Research Center (EXPEC ARC) was selected to play the lead role in directing an industry-led consortium designed to advance geophysical science and technology organized through the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG).

More than 20 companies are expected to participate in the second phase of the SEG Advanced Modeling (SEAM) Program that is beginning in the first quarter 2011 and is expected to last for three years.

SEAM is an industrial consortium dedicated to large-scale leading-edge geophysical numerical modeling. Industry participants provide data to construct subsurface geological models at a level of complexity and size that would not otherwise be possible by any single organization or small number of companies.

For the second phase of the program, SEAM II, the consortium adopted a strategy proposed by EXPEC ARC Geophysical Technology Team (GPT) scientists to improve seismic data quality through near surface characterization.

Much of the foundation for the program resulted from research and technical papers by GPT geophysical consultant Tim Keho and GPT chief technologist Panos Kelamis.

EXPEC ARC geophysicists will provide leadership during the model design phase with emphasis on generating synthetic seismic, gravity and electromagnetic data to model surface conditions encountered in arid environments.

“The 3-D modeling of these surface conditions will provide a benchmark dataset to allow geophysicists to develop highly specialized seismic source and receiver technologies to address near-surface issues that are critical to Saudi Aramco, including velocity estimation, processing of source-generated noise and internal multiple suppression,” Kelamis said.

The first phase of the program, SEAM I, began in March 2007 and focused on deepwater sub-salt exploration challenges with emphasis on the Gulf of Mexico. It had 23 industry partners and succeeded with a project expansion contract under the U.S. Department of Energy.

“The selection of our EXPEC ARC members to lead the SEG consortium with their research further recognizes our geophysicists’ high-impact accomplishments in both supporting Saudi Aramco’s Exploration and leading industry in highly valuable research,” said EXPEC ARC manager Samer S. AlAshgar.
