Iran's gas exports to China to start in 2009

Iran will annually export 10 million tons of natural gas to China beginning in 2009, noted Iran's deputy oil minister Hadi Nejad-Hosseinian. "The contract to export Iran's natural gas to China has been already finalized and it is expected that 10 million tons of LNG (liquefied natural gas) will be exported to that country per annum, starting from 2009," Iran's top oil official said on Tuesday. He added that the amount of the exported gas would be realized after completion of two giant projects being developed by the international companies Shell and Total.

Nejad-Hosseinian stated that upon the conclusion of the agreement, the gas exports to China would gradually increase to 40 million tons per annum. Elsewhere in his comments, he asserted that development of the South Pars gas field by Qatar has enabled that country to start exports of gas much sooner than Iran; "therefore, the current criticisms against the Oil Ministry are irrelevant."
