Aramco & SAR Sign MOU to Explore the Rail Network

Saudi Aramco, represented by Pipelines, Distribution and Terminals executive director Nasir K. Al-Naimi, on Oct. 1 signed a memorandum of understanding with the Saudi Railway Co. (SAR) to explore ways the rail network might transport petroleum products from the Jubail Bulk Plant to al-Jouf and Turaif Bulk Plants.

CEO Dr. Rumaih Al-Rumaih signed on behalf of SAR.

“This initiative supports the Kingdom’s plan to promote the rail infrastructure and will enhance safety on the highways,” Al-Naimi said. “The train will eliminate the daily movement of approximately 300 trucks between Duba, al-Jouf and Turaif Bulk Plants. It will also achieve savings in diesel consumption as compared to the trucking alternative while enhancing the petroleum product supply chain and creating job opportunities.

“We look forward to finalizing the business deal with SAR as soon as possible,” he said.

Dr. Al-Rumaih also expressed his happiness in signing the agreement and said he looked forward to seeing the project materialize in the near future. SAR, as a new name in the domestic transportation market, seeks to satisfy market requirements by providing advanced railway services — moving passengers, freight and minerals.

The planned railway will link a number of cities and villages in Saudi Arabia, and ultimately link with neighboring countries, leading to further social, economic, industrial, agricultural and commercial development. The north-south railway has been in partial operation since May, connecting Ras al-Khair on the East Coast to Hazm al-Jalameed in the far north, for mineral freight movement. It will soon integrate with the existing Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) network by connecting to Riyadh, Jubail and Dammam.
