Haradh Project Marks Milestone

Source: 9/8/2005, Location: Middle East

The Haradh Arab Light Crude Increment-III Projects collectively have reached a major safety milestone: 5 million work-hours without a safety incident. The construction phase is 70 percent complete, with all the major process equipment installed, about 1,090 tons of structure steel erected and more than 3,100 tons of steel piping materials received.

Workers are dwarfed by the Haradh GOSP-3 dehydrator and desalter vessels. Increment-III Project workers set a safety milestone recently of 5 million work-hours without a safety incident. The construction workforce reached its peak in August with more than 1,700 workers.

The latest, most critical and the heaviest work was transporting and installing the gigantic High Pressure Production Trap at the Haradh GOSP-3 site. This vessel was set on its foundations with relative ease without the use of heavy-lift cranes. Planning for safety in construction was done to ensure the work was completed without any hitches. The vessel is approximately 7.3 meters in diameter, 50 meters long and weighs more than 413 metric tons. It was fabricated in the Gulf Engineering Co. plant at Jubail. From there, it traveled more than 320 kilometers in eight days on special trucks.

The High Pressure Production Trap primarily will be used to accumulate the wet crude from the south corner of the giant South Ghawar oil field at Haradh. Associated gas will be separated from the wet crude in this vessel, and will be compressed for transportation via pipelines to the gas processing plant.

Other project components have already been installed, including a third gas-turbine-driven water injection pump at Haradh GOSP-2 and a third seawater supply booster pump at the Hawiyah Central Water Injection Pump Station.

More than 150 km of pipelines, new and extensions, have been built to transport seawater and processed salt water for injection to maintain reservoir pressure. Also, 160 km of new pipelines and extensions to the existing crude and gas pipelines are being constructed to transport the crude and gas products from Haradh GOSP-3 to the processing facilities at Abqaiq and 'Uthmaniyah.

On completion and commission in the first quarter of 2006, the Haradh GOSP-3 will produce 300,000 barrels per day of Arab light crude and approximately 160 million standard cubic feet per day of associated gas.
