An engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the $1.5 billion expansion of Sohar refinery will be awarded within few months. "We have received bids and are evaluating the same. It will be commissioned in 2016," said Musab Al Mahruqi, CEO of Orpic. The expansion project is expected to improve the Sohar refinery's product range and increase refining capacity by another 60,000 barrels per day oil to its current capacity of 116,000 barrels per day.

"The benefits expected from this project include improved refining process to cater for heavier crude, improved environmental performance, more fuels produced (70 per cent increase), ability to produce bitumen for local market, increased production of polypropylene, and less imports of naphtha as feedstock to Aromatics," Al Mahruqi added.

A tender for the EPC contract of the expansion project was floated in December, 2012 following a pre-qualification process. Around 50 companies had applied for pre-qualification in December 2011, and nine were pre-qualified in August, 2012. Al Mahruqi said that Orpic has devised a business plan for the next five years as part of its strategic focus.
