RWE Dea announced that the Kahlouche-2 exploration well located in the Algerian Reggane North area has tested successfully for gas from the Lower Devonian and Carboniferous formation. After two positive exploration wells, Reggane-5 and Sali-1 earlier this year, RWE Dea and it’s partners have successfully drilled and tested the third exploration well Kahlouche-2 in a new isolated structure.

The well encountered gas in the Lower Devonian formation (Siegenian) at a depth of 3,983 m with a flow rate of 763,000 m3/d at a choke size of 32”/64” and a WHFP of 4,068 psi. In the Carboniferous formation the well has been tested at a depth of 2,360 m with a flow rate of 483,000 m3/d at a choke size of 32”/64” and a WHFP of 2,649 psi.

The significance of this discovery is not only the important flow in the Lower Devonian level and the size of this new structure; it is also the first time that the Carboniferous levels produce in this basin, representing a new play in the area. The Reggane North permit comprises of blocks 351c-352c covering an area of approximately 8,566 km2. RWE Dea holds a 22.5% equity interest in the Repsol YPF operated permit.

An additional seismic programme of 650 km of 2D is currently in progress and the next wells for the current year will be the Reggane-6 and the Azrafil-2. An ambitious exploration and delineation work programme for 2007 is at the planning stage.
