Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced that it has received an order for a steam turbine generator from Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd.

This steam turbine generator is designed for the Daejeon Southwest Mass Energy Facility Project, Daejeon, Korea, conducted by the Korea National Housing Corporation. Hyundai Engineering & Construction has concluded the power plant contract on a Full Turn Key basis in order to supply both heat and power to new residential areas under construction and simultaneously supply steam mainly for the ondol, Korea’s unique power-steam combined floor heating system, and also partly for hot water usage such as shower water.

The generator to be made by Kawasaki has a power generation capacity of 48.3MW by utilizing steam produced by LNG boilers. It is scheduled to be delivered to Hyundai in December, 2009 and is planned to be handed over to the end customer Korea National Housing Corporation in December, 2010 after Hyundai completes the power plant construction and on-site trial run.

Responding to the recent increasing crude oil prices and rising awareness towards environmental/energy issues seen on a global basis, the Korean government is promoting long-term regional heat-power combined supply using natural gas with a focus on urban areas in order to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants. To achieve this, the above project has been set as one of the government’s initiatives and will be commercialized by the Korea National Housing Corporation.
