BMT WBM (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, a leading international engineering and risk management consultancy, is delighted to announce that it will be presenting its TUFLOW flood and hydraulic modelling software suite at the World Bank’s Workshop ‘Flood Model Showcase’ event on September 23rd and 24th 2014 in Washington DC.

The purpose of the workshop is to present common flood problems and the best-in-class models and tools that can be used to not only assess and mitigate risk, but also to educate decision makers in order to reduce exposure and vulnerability to flood related hazards. It will be an opportunity for World Bank task teams and staff to see the models in action and to compare their capabilities in detail. The emphasis will be on the value that the output from these tools can deliver.

The two-day event is part of the recently started Global Initiative on Disaster Risk Management resulting from collaboration between the Water Partnership Program (WPP) and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR). This initiative was launched in response to an increased demand from World Bank project teams and its client-country counterparts for tools to improve decision-making and investment planning in the water sector.

TUFLOW is a powerful computational engine that provides one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) solutions of the free-surface flow equations to simulate flood and tidal wave propagation. It leads the way in 2D/1D flood modelling with unparalleled 1D/2D linking, flexibility, robustness and a range of features no other product provides. TUFLOW is ideally suited to model a range of scenarios including: flooding of rivers and creeks with complex flow patterns; overland and piped flows through urban areas, estuarine and coastal tide hydraulics and inundation from storm tides and tsunamis.

Tony McAlister, Managing Director at BMT WBM explains: “We are delighted to have been asked to present TUFLOW at such a prestigious event. Floods and storm tides cause extensive damage, stress, loss of life-and-limb, and dislocate communities. In order to fully understand and manage these risks, a reliable hydrodynamic engine that accurately predicts flood and storm tide inundation patterns is required. We will be demonstrating how TUFLOW meets this challenge effectively, reliably and within an economical cost structure.”
