Seawater Project Largest of Its Kind

The Qurayyah Sea Water Plant (QSWP) Expansion Project is forging ahead with a team of Saudi Aramco engineers working closely with contractor personnel in Italy. The project will support increasing oil production and improve field recovery by adding 4.5 millions barrels per day (bpd) of treated seawater to the revamped Qurayyah plant, about 40 kilometers east of Abqaiq.

With the project's completion, the plant will have a treatment capacity of 14 million bpd, making QSWP the world's largest seawater treatment plant intended for oil recovery.

The expanded plant will include nine treatment modules, sedimentation basins and head shipping pumps and the extension of an above-grade canal. The plant's refitting includes a whole new electrical system and the upgrade by Saudi Electric Co. of the 230 kv incoming power supply.

Since the expansion will connect to existing facilities, a schedule has been devised that accurately and thoroughly lays out the steps that will be taken to switch over to each facility. That plan also will offer a more accurate estimate of the down time needed for switch over.
