CNOOC Successfully Develops RSS & LWD Systems

it was learned that CNOOC had completed a well operation in Bohai Bay with its self-developed rotary steerable system "Welleader" and logging-while-drilling system "Drilog".The two systems facilitated an 813-meter directional drilling operation and steered into three targets. The successful application of the two systems would allow CNOOC to independently explore complex formations and drill more wells from a single spot in a cost-effective way.

Currently, over 40% of the directional wells drilled in the world employ a rotary steering drilling system. The system is coupled with a logging-while-drilling system to send back directional data back to the surface without disturbing drilling operation. With the data, the logging engineers are able to control the well path accurately.

In 2008, with the support from the national "863" program, China Oilfield Services Limited ("COSL") began to develop its own rotary steering drilling system and logging-while-drilling system. After years of efforts, CNOOC has harvested the two systems and becomes the fourth company in the world to master these advanced technologies.
