Members of the OceanWorks team were in attendance at the Vancouver Aquarium for the introduction of the 1/3 scale model of an Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) node completed by OceanWorks and donated to the Vancouver Aquarium. This demonstration node is a representation of the full scale products built by OceanWorks International which are deployed off the coast of BC between the mainland and Vancouver Island and are the primary components of the Salish Sea observatories operated by Ocean Networks Canada (ONC). The model node will now be on permanent display in the Strait of Georgia aquarium tank along with a video monitor in place outside the tank streaming real time data from the actual Seafloor Observatory deployed in the Strait of Georgia. The general public is sure to have a clearer understanding of how the waters off the coast of British Columbia and in the Strait of Georgia are monitored.
The new addition to the aquarium was ushered in with an informative presentation; “Monsters of the Abyss: Deep Sea Creatures Off The BC Coast” by ONC’s Chief Scientist Dr. Kim Juniper followed by an educational Q&A session, a tour of the aquarium and its new display, and an informal reception culminating in a photo session.
