A new test report from Seacroft Marine Consultants verifies that Aptomar’s SECurus system could considerably improve reliability and success rate of offshore search and rescues, particularly during the hours of darkness, restricted visibility and poor weather conditions.

Earlier this year, international oil spill detection, search and rescue player Aptomar engaged Seacroft Marine Consultants Ltd (Seacroft) to perform an independent, third party test of its SECurus system’s performance in offshore search and rescue operations.

Carried out off the coast of Aberdeen, Scotland, managed by Seacroft and through utilisation of emergency, response and rescue vessel (ERRV), Ocean Tay, operated by Atlantic Offshore Rescue Ltd, the test provided encouraging results with regards to the SECurus’ performance in offshore search and rescue (SAR) operations.

“As Seacroft’s report concludes, the test displays SECurus’ ability to considerably improve reliability and success rate of search and rescues, particularly during the hours of darkness, restricted visibility and poor weather conditions,” says Lars Solberg, chief sales and marketing officer of Aptomar.

According to the report, the affective and reliable detection of a person in the water was determined to be approximately 1.3 nautical miles, while the SECurus was still able to observe a person at a distance of approximately 1.7 nautical miles. At a distance of 1.7 nautical miles almost all ability to see any indication of a person was lost, while he was still visual through the SECurus system.

“Based on the test results, it is conceivable that identifying casualties in the water from a distance, knowing the geographical location, and being able to do this irrespective of daylight, may enable an ERRV to recover more people in shorter time compared to current deployed detection technology,“ says Michael Cowman, technical director of Seacroft Marine Consultants Ltd.

Aptomar’s SECurus system combines stabilized long-range infrared (IR), digital video cameras, and search light with an electronic chart system. SECurus is the first sensor on the market that can measure and position the relative thickness of an oil spill. In addition, the system is a tool for high-risk operations like surveillance, search and rescue, firefighting and towing, helping to reduce the probability and consequence of an unintended incident.

Atlantic Offshore Rescue Ltd provided its ERRV Ocean Tay as the test platform for Seacroft.

“As a provider of dedicated ERRVs to the offshore oil industry, we are always looking for the most innovative technology to enhance our offering. We were pleased to take part in the SECurus SAR testing, which resulted in highly relevant and interesting findings, which further underpin Atlantic Offshore as a leader in our sector,” says Matthew Gordon, Managing Director of Atlantic Offshore Rescue Ltd.
