China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) has started the operation of the eastern branch of a third cross-country natural gas pipeline, the Xinhua News agency said.

The east branch spans 863 km and has a capacity to transport 15 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas per year, accounting for half of the total capacity of the project, Xinhua reported.

CNPC aims to connect the pipeline with gas producer CNOOC's pipeline networks in Fujian province in south east China.
