Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has reentered the Egyptian power market for the first time in six years, as well as winning successive orders in Africa since winning a project to improve the performance of a thermal power plant in Botswana last year.

Doosan announced on December 12 that it had received the Notices of Award from UEEPC (Upper Egypt Electricity Production Company) and CEPC (Cairo Electricity Production Company), two state-run Egyptian power companies, to supply turbines and generators.

Doosan is set to supply, install, and test operate one unit of 650MW-class turbine generator at the Assiut Thermal Power Plant and one unit at the Cairo West Thermal Power Plant, which is under construction by UEEPC and CEPC, respectively. The project order is worth about 137 million dollars (about 160 billion won) in total, and is scheduled for completion by April 2020 after 40 months of work.

Heung Gweon Park, CEO of the Turbine Generator BG, said, “Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction outbid global power equipment players including GE, Siemens and MHPS in an international open competitive bid,” adding, “With proven competitiveness, Doosan will concert its efforts to expand EPC projects and deliver more advanced power equipment and facilities overseas.”

Doosan aims to constantly expand its presence in Africa, with its branch offices in Cairo, Egypt and Johannesburg, South Africa. According to World Energy Outlook 2015 published by the International Energy Agency, the energy demand of Africa is expected to increase about 75 percent by 2040, with a surge in the combined capacity of its power equipment to 565GW.’
