Russian Gas Transit Volumes via Ukraine Up 23% in 2016

Russian natural gas volumes sent via Ukraine to European consumers rose by 23 percent in 2016 to 82.2 billion cubic metres (bcm), Ukrainian gas transport monopoly Ukrtransgaz said on Tuesday.

Ukrtransgaz, which had forecast an increase of around 7 percent to as much as 72 bcm, gave no reason for the higher-than-expected supply.

More than a third of Russia's gas exports to the European Union currently cross Ukraine but Russian gas exporter Gazprom has said it wants to bypass Ukraine altogether by building new pipelines.

Ukraine's transit gas volumes stood at 67.1 bcm in 2015, a rise from 64 bcm in 2014 but well below the 116 bcm carried in 2010.

Relations between Kiev and Moscow have deteriorated since Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula in March 2014 and Ukraine halted its own imports of Russian gas in November 2015 after a clash with Gazprom over prices and payments.
