Sapura Energy Berhad is pleased to announce the appointment of Tan Sri Dato' Seri Shamsul Azhar Abbas as its Director and Non-Independent Non-Executive Chairman. He succeeds Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr.) Hamid Bugo, who will be retiring after being in the company for more than 8 years.
Tan Sri Shamsul, whose appointment is effective 30th July 2020, is a nominee director of Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB). Sapura Energy is one of PNB’s key strategic companies, in which PNB and its associated funds collectively own a 40% stake.
Tan Sri Shamsul is a key leader in the oil and gas industry, having helmed Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) as President and CEO from 2010 to 2015. He joined PETRONAS in 1975 and served in various capacities during his 40 years’ tenure with the organisation.
During his leadership, he guided PETRONAS in undertaking strategic landmark projects such as the Pengerang Integrated Refinery and Petrochemical Project (RAPID) and PETRONAS Floating LNG Facilities Project. Tan Sri Shamsul was instrumental in the global expansion of the national oil company, through the acquisition of Progress Energy Canada and the development of shale gas to LNG via the Pacific North West LNG project.
Tan Sri Shamsul also led MISC Berhad as Chairman in 2010 to 2011, and as President and CEO from 2004 to 2008.
Tan Sri Shamsul holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Energy Management from University of Pennsylvania, a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Economics from Universiti Sains Malaysia, as well as a Technical Diploma in Petroleum Economics from Paris-based Institut Français du Pétrole. He was a Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and was a member of Board of Trustees of the Razak School of Government (RSOG).
Sapura Energy President and Group Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin warmly welcomed Tan Sri Shamsul to the chairmanship, on behalf of the management and staff of Sapura Energy.
