Working in partnership with ORLEN Upstream, Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG) has successfully completed drilling of the Grodzewo-1 well in the municipality of Srem. Based on the Company’s estimates, the well could produce up to 20 mcm of natural gas annually.

“The success of the Grodzewo-1 well is another proof of the strong hydrocarbon potential of the central part of Wielkopolska region. We are determined to fully exploit these resources, hence our plans to continue drilling in that region over the coming year,” said Pawel Majewski, President of the Management Board of PGNiG SA. “We are all the more happy to announce this success because we have had to work through the hurdles of epidemic-related restrictions,” he added.

The Grodzewo-1 well was drilled under combined licence No. 29/2001/L Srem-Jarocin for the exploration for crude oil and natural gas, and for the production of crude oil and natural gas. The work was carried out jointly with ORLEN Upstream, under a joint operating agreement signed in 2009. The partners’ respective interests in the licence are 51% for PGNiG and 49% for ORLEN Upstream.

The well reached a total depth of 2,940 metres. The drilling work was performed by Exalo Drilling S.A., a company of the PGNiG Group.

Previous discoveries in the region include Zaniemysl, Sroda Wielkopolska, Roszków, Kromolice and Kromolice Poludnie, Winna Góra, Lisewo, Komorze and, most recently, Miloslaw.

The work is part of PGNiG’s massive exploration campaign targeting Rotliegend formations in the Polish Lowlands. This is a highly prospective area with prolific resources, as demonstrated by several dozen hydrocarbon fields already discovered within Rotliegend formations over the past 50 years. Since the 1990s, Rotliegend formations have remained the main target of PGNiG’s exploration efforts in western Poland.
