Gasum is involved in the public research part of the Hydrogen and Carbon Value Chains in Green Electrification (HYGCEL) research and consortium project. Preparation of the project was coordinated by CLIC Innovation, the research part is headed by LUT University and other universities involved in the project are Tampere University and the University of Eastern Finland. There are 19 parties in the consortium and some of the companies participating have their own parallel project. In October, the consortium received a positive funding decision of €10 million from Business Finland.

The HYGCEL project aims to respond to the global demand for fossil-free products. LUT believes that the research starting up will address the core of the energy transformation and Finland’s industrial competitiveness. Evaluation of global value chains will also take into account markets and regulation, infrastructure efficiency and the associated sustainability and safety aspects.

“It’s great to be involved in a research and consortium project of this scope. The project seeks to study and identify Finland’s green electrification hydrogen and carbon value chains as well as the transformation of the energy system at the system level. What value chains are best suited to Finland and how the new infrastructure needs to be built in an optimal way. Also biogas and the carbon dioxide it removes could have their own role in this,” says Viljami Kinnunen, Senior Development Engineer, Gasum.

The project is expected to last until 2024.
