Korea Gas Corporation (CEO Chae Hee-bong) announced that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for a 'Gwangju base-type hydrogen production base' at the 3rd general industrial complex in Pyeong-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, on December 2nd.
- The event was attended by about 90 people, including officials and citizens, including President Chae Hee-bong of Gas Corporation and In-cheol Jo, Deputy Mayor of Culture and Economy of Gwangju.
- This project, with a total project cost of KRW 25.8 billion (KRW 6.8 billion from the government, KRW 19 billion from the Korea Gas Corporation), is the first mid-to-large scale project to be subsidized by the government to build a hydrogen production base.
- KOGAS finally selected Gwangju Metropolitan City and Gyeongnam Changwon City as the target project sites after going through an open call for 17 cities and provinces nationwide in May of last year. Business agreements were signed in various fields such as.
- The Gwangju hydrogen production base, scheduled to be completed in March 2023, will produce more than 4 tons of hydrogen per day using natural gas supplied through the pipeline, which is enough to supply 10,000 hydrogen passenger cars.
- Hydrogen charging stations currently operating in Gwangju are receiving by-product hydrogen from Seosan and Ulsan. When the hydrogen production base is completed, supply stability and economic feasibility will increase, which is expected to accelerate the expansion of hydrogen cars and charging stations.
- A KOGAS official said, “Starting in Gwangju, we plan to complete the construction of base-type hydrogen production bases in Changwon and Pyeongtaek by the end of 2023. We will lead the transition,” he said.
