MDL Designs Lightweight Solution for m-Pipe

MDL has designed a bespoke solution for the transpooling and storage of Magma’s unique Thermoplastic Composite Pipe (TCP) – the m-pipe.

The solution consisted of a custom-designed pallet to maintain m-pipe’s MBR (maximum bend radius), with a height to suit a 2x product packing arrangement.

The pallet height and outer flange diameter had been optimized for the combined lengths of the 2x product lengths, as the composite pipe was required to be spooled on in a single layer, with no overlap of the single products or products spooled on top of each other.

The custom pallet assembly is split into 6 main boltable sections to allow convenient road transport.

The pallet was designed to interface with a standalone turntable delivering 2.2Te of spooling tension up to a height of 2.8m.

To complete the scope, MDL carried out the transpooling procedure on location at Magma’s facility in Portsmouth.

Andrew Blaquiere, Managing Director at MDL said:
“We’re pleased to have worked with Magma and the m-pipe again, following the delivery of the Product Deployment System – the m-IDP – in 2016.

“This latest scope as well as the m-IDP delivery are perfect examples of how our comprehensive in-house capability and innovative mindset assist clients in addressing various challenges – big or small.

“As was the case on both deliveries for Magma, we deploy our engineering expertise and graphic design capability to understand and visualise a fully-tailored system – a solution that doesn’t just fill the gap in a portfolio, but in fact delivers the most efficiencies to the client’s operations and overall business.”
