Clariant, a focused, sustainable, and inventive specialty chemical company, announced that its sunliquid® manufacturing plant in Podari, Romania, has generated the first commercial cellulosic ethanol1. Shell, a renowned global oil firm, has a multi-year contract for the whole offtake. The factory undertook a thorough commissioning process over the last six months, ending in a smooth commencement of production. From 250,000 tonnes of locally obtained agricultural leftovers, approximately 50,000 tonnes of second-generation biofuels will be produced. This plant's cellulosic ethanol can be used as a drop-in replacement for ethanol in fuel blends, but it also has downstream applications in sustainable aviation fuel and bio-based chemicals.

To establish their use more widely, their commercial production and availability must be increased rapidly, which is why the successful start of our sunliquid® plant in Podari is so vital.”

The plant in Podari, Romania, is built on a 10-hectare area and employs a workforce numbering approximately 100. Contracts have been signed with more than 300 local farmers to ensure the supply of the necessary feedstock.
