Vindpark Falkenberg: a New Vision for Local Wind Power in Sweden

At a time when rising electricity bills are of concern to communities across Sweden, decision-makers in central and local government are searching for solutions to deliver affordable, reliable and secure energy.

Residents of Falkenberg municipality, in the south-west county of Halland, have one long-term solution to today’s energy crisis within their sights: the wind power generated by Vindpark Falkenberg.

Vindpark Falkenberg is the new name for a once dormant offshore windfarm project that has been rekindled and re-imagined to help Sweden deliver locally produced renewable energy.

Previously known as Kattegatt Offshore, Vindpark Falkenberg is spearheaded by Falkenberg-based Renewable Sweden (previously known as Wind Sweden) and Corio Generation, a Green Investment Group (GIG) portfolio company

The Green Investment Group acquired the Kattegatt Offshore project in late 2021 ahead of the establishment of Corio Generation in April 2022.

Under the re-imagined Vindpark Falkenberg project, a seven year-old permit granted for Kattegatt Offshore would be extended and modified to take full advantage of the game changing technological developments in offshore wind power of recent years.

Under the new project plan, Renewable Sweden and Corio aim to expand Vindpark Falkenberg further to support rapidly rising demand for renewable energy across Sweden.

This new project would consist of the already licensed Kattegatt Offshore and an optimised area to the south and west which has been designated in the municipality's master plan for energy production. Construction could start within two years after the new permit is granted.

To help build local awareness of the new Vindpark Falkenberg project, Renewables Sweden is now embarking on a public information campaign to inform community members about the project’s benefits.

“We look forward to contributing to the rapid construction of more locally produced electricity for the residents of Falkenberg,” says Jeanette Lindeblad, CEO of Renewables Sweden, who has been involved in the project since its inception.

“This is a big investment and I want to invite Falkenberg's residents and businesses to join us on the journey. Together, we can quickly contribute to a positive development for the town and the business community while helping to lower the price of electricity.”
