On March 6 2023, Rijeka Gateway welcomed Mrs. Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minster of Denmark and Mr. Andrej Plenkovic, Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia. The fact that the Danish Prime Minister started her working visit to Croatia in Rijeka speaks a lot about the importance of the Rijeka Gateway project for the whole Europe.
“Rijeka Gateway will be a modern, state-of-the-art gateway terminal. It will be operated with remote-controlled electrical container handling equipment, in line with our ambitious decarbonisation roadmap and Terminal of the Future concept,” shared Rijeka Gateway CEO Koen Benders and added that the total investments in Croatia by Maersk, Enna Logic and Rijeka Gateway are expected to be over €480 million by 2026.
Tomislav Žunic, CFO of the project also pointed out that Maersk, Enna Logic and Rijeka Gateway expect to create over 1,100 direct jobs in Croatia - of which 300+ will be in the new terminal, whilst indirect employment in the region could be a multitude of that number. Furthermore, most Rijeka Gateway contracts will be performed by local or domestic companies.
Terminal opening (go-live) is planned for Q2 2025. The quay of the future terminal is already built but the yard needs to be constructed. A heritage protected warehouse (Skladište / Warehouse 22) is part of the concession and it’ll be renovated and turned into Rijeka Gateway’s future offices.
