Transgrid has launched a recruitment campaign for its 2024 Graduate Program which offers a unique opportunity to learn from leading energy experts and play an important role in accelerating Australia’s renewable energy transition.

Executive General Manager of People, Culture and Safety Jane Sherlock said: “There’s never been a more exciting time to work in Australia’s energy industry and gain invaluable knowledge, skills and experience which will help define your career.

“We operate a 13,000km high-voltage electricity transmission network and 110 substations in NSW and the ACT, providing safe, reliable and affordable electricity to more than three million homes and businesses.

“Transgrid is also leading the energy transition, accelerating the nation-critical transmission projects needed to deliver cheap, clean and reliable electricity to Australia’s eastern seaboard.

“Our EnergyConnect, HumeLink and VNI West projects will reshape the National Electricity Market, enabling the integration of renewables, reducing the nation’s carbon emissions and helping to drive down the cost of electricity.”

As part of the award-winning 'Leaders of Tomorrow' program, graduates join a two-year immersion program which combines on-the-job learning with formal training.

The sought-after program allows graduates to rotate through different placements across the network, with 40 places on offer in 2024.

“Graduates are supported each step of the way through a combination of training, on-the-job learning, regular check-ins and mentoring from experienced leaders, allowing them to gain the skills for an exciting career in energy,” Ms Sherlock said.

“These graduates are the next generation of leaders who will support Australia’s transition to a renewable energy future.”

Basma Daqaq joined Transgrid’s Graduate Program last year after graduating from the University of Wollongong with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours).

The Wollongong resident said Transgrid has provided her with different roles and experiences including working on Australia’s biggest transmission project – the $1.8 billion EnergyConnect interconnector – currently under construction in the Far West of NSW.

“Project EnergyConnect is one of the biggest projects currently in Australia and you get to learn from everybody on site. There are always other members of the team on site to provide support and guidance,” the 32-year-old said.

“Basically you make a change every single day – whether it’s on site or whether it’s long term. It’s insightful, challenging at times but a great learning experience and fun to be around. Makes me proud to be part of the team and part of the project.”

Ms Daqaq encouraged other graduates to apply to be part of the program and join the Transgrid team.

“The program is structured well and the team are very supportive. Every single team I have worked with are wonderful and willing to help you and answer your questions,” she said.

“You learn a lot and have the opportunity to work on different projects and areas and get a flavour of what your career path would look like and what you enjoy the most.

“I think I’m just trying to set an example for all females to step out of your comfort zone and just do whatever you want to do.”

Recent graduates with a degree in Engineering, Construction, Project Management, Business, Finance, Technology, Communication, Law and Political Science are encouraged to apply for the 2024 intake.

The program is part of Transgrid’s commitment to increasing gender and cultural diversity with a focus on developing pathways for female and Indigenous engineers.

Transgrid placed #1 in the energy and utilities sector and #61 overall in the GradAustralia Top 100 Graduate Employers for 2023. The company was also ranked best workplace in the sector for green initiatives.

Applications for Transgrid’s 2024 Graduate Program will close on May 1.
