SNC-Lavalin Group Inc., a fully integrated professional services and project management company with offices around the world, is pleased to announce the appointment of seasoned nuclear industry executive Gary Rose as Executive Vice-President, Canada, Nuclear at SNC-Lavalin. In this role, Mr. Rose will also serve as the President & CEO of Candu Energy Inc. The appointment is effective July 14 this year, upon the planned retirement of Bill Fox, who has held the role since 2018. Mr. Rose will join SNC-Lavalin on June 19, and complete a transition period with Mr. Fox, before assuming his new role. Based in Toronto, he will report to Joe St. Julian, President, Nuclear. Mr. Rose joins SNC-Lavalin from Ontario Power Generation, where he was most recently Vice-President of New Nuclear Growth.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Gary to SNC-Lavalin,” said Joe. St Julian, President, Nuclear, SNC-Lavalin. “Gary is a highly-regarded individual in Ontario’s nuclear ecosystem. His decision to join us is a testament to the top talent SNC-Lavalin continues to attract. As we enter the strongest nuclear market of the 21st century, firmly underpinned by rising power demands, energy security goals, and Net Zero imperatives, a key part of Gary’s mandate is expanding the footprint of the CANDU® technology currently found on four continents, as well as SMR new builds. I’d also like to thank Bill for his leadership and contributions to the nuclear industry over 45 years. We wish him a well-deserved retirement.”

Mr. Rose will oversee all operations carried out by SNC-Lavalin’s Canadian Nuclear business unit. This includes the design and development of CANDU technology, of which SNC-Lavalin is the steward, as well as building new SMRs in Canada and CANDU reactors globally. His oversight also encompasses continuing the on-time and on-budget performance of CANDU life-extension projects, including at Bruce Power, Darlington, and in Romania, as well as operations and maintenance services for the CANDU fleet both in Canada and international markets across South America, Europe, and Asia.

“I’m no stranger to SNC-Lavalin, as the steward of the CANDU technology I’ve spent so much of my career with,” said Gary Rose, incoming Executive Vice-President, Canada, Nuclear at SNC-Lavalin. “It was SNC-Lavalin’s diversified portfolio, their role in the market for both SMR and CANDU technologies, and the Company’s involvement in key R&D activities such as managing the renowned Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ sites, that attracted me to take on the role at this time. We see strong prospects for new CANDU and SMR builds. There has not been a more exciting time to work in nuclear power, since the first wave of CANDU new builds brought online 23 reactors in 22 years. With many countries around the world facing impending electricity shortfalls, Net Zero obligations, and energy independence objectives, I believe we are on the verge of another nuclear renaissance. Alongside SMRs, larger-scale CANDU reactors, both existing and new ones, are absolutely going to play a central role in that renaissance.”

Background of Gary Rose
Mr. Rose’s extensive experience in nuclear energy at OPG has spanned numerous mandates. This includes leadership roles across exploring the development of new nuclear builds in Ontario, the CANDU reactor life-extensions at OPG’s Darlington site, supporting other jurisdictions on their nuclear new build strategies in both Canada and abroad, and interfacing with both provincial and federal levels of government in Canada. He has leveraged his financial and project management know-how to enable on-time and on-budget delivery of large nuclear projects. Mr. Rose has worked on small and large grid scale nuclear technologies, industrial applications, and micro modular reactors.

Mr. Rose is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) holds the ICD. D designation for the Institute of Corporate Directors and a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. He has served as past Chair of the Board and Governor of Durham College, and is a past Trustee of Whitby Public Library.
