A broad group of directorates has identified 20 potential offshore wind areas, with a recommendation for further study. The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway participated in this work as an observer.
The 20 areas are ones that are technically suitable for offshore wind and where conflicts of interest are relatively low. Moving ahead, thorough impact assessments will be performed to further narrow down the areas.
Broad collaboration
The Government’s ambition is to designate areas for the development of 30 GW of offshore wind. This would correspond to nearly a doubling of Norwegian power production. The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy (MPE) has asked the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) to recommend which sea areas may be suitable for wind power.
The proposal has been prepared by NVE, the Directorate of Fisheries, the Norwegian Environment Agency, the Norwegian Coastal Administration, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate and the Norwegian Defence Estates Agency. The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway had a role as observer, while the Institute of Marine Research, the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, Statnett, the Civil Aviation Authority of Norway, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, the Norwegian Communications Authority and Avinor provided relevant knowledge and data.
