Two EGAT innovations; an AI fire detection and prompt notification system and an automatic gas turbine control system for power plants, won four awards at JDIE 2023 in Japan.
On July 7-8, 2023, Mr. Prasertsak Cherngchawano, Deputy Governor – Strategy of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), revealed that EGAT encouraged its employees to develop research, innovations, and inventions to improve its operation as well as the quality of life of Thai people. EGAT submitted two innovations which won four awards at the international stage where over 300 innovations from more than 15 countries were submitted at the 2023 Japan Design, Idea and Invention Expo (JDIE 2023) in Tokyo, Japan.
The four awards include a Gold Medal and a JDIE 2023 Special Award from the President of Chizai Corporation, Japan, for EGAT’s invention “Fire Alarm Image Processing.” It is a system for detecting small fires using artificial intelligence (AI) and a USB camera. The system uses a Microcontroller Unit (MCU) to convert the data into a digital form, analyses the abnormality at the server in real time, and notifies mobile phones via the application “LINE” as well as local sites via horn alarms. The invention will help save substation maintenance cost due to being 60 times less expensive. EGAT plans to use it at other EGAT substations nationwide as well as other locations that need a fire alarm system, which will immensely benefit the organization and the country.
EGAT also won a Silver Medal and a Special Award from the Indonesian Invention and Innovation Promotion Association (INNOPA) for EGAT’s invention “Automatic Control System of the Performance Optimized Operation Mode for GT26 Gas Turbine.” It is a development of the control system for the GT26 Gas Turbine installed at the North Bangkok Power Plant since 2021. Originally, the operation mode can only be switched by the machine operator, but the newly developed system can help choose the maximum power output according to the power purchase agreement. It saves scheduled maintenance cost, increases power system stability, reduces error, and decreases the responsibilities of the operator so they can do other work efficiently. The innovation will help save scheduled maintenance cost of 3 million baht/year/unit and can be applied to other power plants as well.
“The four awards from JDIE 2023 are considered the pride of EGAT and Thais. EGAT is ready to support and promote the development of innovations and inventions that benefit the country for the better quality of life of Thai people,” Mr. Prasertsak Cherngchawano added.
